Happy Birthday Thien Nhan!

Happy Birthday Thien Nhan!

It's hard to believe but the little guy turns four today! Last night, mum Mai Anh took Thien Nhan to the local supermarket where he chose some candies and little toys to give to his classmates.

This morning, a great party was held for Thien Nhan and his school friends, who enjoyed cake and soft drinks. Tonight, there will be another small celebration at Thien Nhan's home.

We wish this brave little boy the best of luck during his upcoming surgery. Have a fantastic year, Thien Nhan!

Thien Nhan's eldest brother, Big Minh, celebrated his ninth birthday this week and mom Mai Anh bought a big chocolate cake for the occasion. After Minh blew out the candles, Little Minh, 3, and Thien Nhan, 2, each got a turn.

The three brothers then went to check out nearby toy shops so that Big Minh could select a toy for himself.

Sweet Moments

Not only did Thien Nhan spend yesterday afternoon in the company of Miss Vietnam, he also got to share the beauty queen's birthday cake! Ms. Mai Phuong Thuy celebrated her 20th birthday with Thien Nhan and other fans at a book signing in Hanoi. A successful model, Ms. Phuong Thuy is donating proceeds from the sales of her new photo book and DVD towards Thien Nhan's medical expenses.

Can male genitals be reconstructed?

Testicles
Because Thien Nhan has lost all testicular tissue he will not be able to father children and will need lifelong hormone replacement therapy. Prosthetic testicles will be inserted when he is older for cosmetic reasons.

Penis
As a first step, Thien Nhan will undergo urethral dilation to make urination easier. Because it appears that no penis tissue remains, at the moment, creating a feeling, functional penis remains out-of-reach. But there is hope.

Lab-grown penis cells
In 2006, American researchers managed to grow rabbit penis cells in a lab and use them to entirely replace the animals’ missing organs. Lead researcher Dr. Atala said that human trials remained “far off” but that the goal was “highly credible”. Dr. Atala’s colleague, reconstructive surgeon Dr. Wessells, estimated it would be around 2013 before a fully-functional tissue engineered penis could be grown in the lab and attached to a man or child. That’s just five years away.

Penis transplant
Also in 2006, Chinese surgeons performed the world's first penis transplant on a man whose organ had been damaged in an accident. The procedure, which required complex microsurgery to connect nerves and tiny blood vessels, was deemed a surgical success. After 10 days, tests revealed the organ had a rich blood supply and the man was able to urinate normally. Unfortunately, the recipient and his wife suffered severe psychological trauma and later demanded that the organ be removed. It remains unclear as to whether or not sexual intercourse would be possible with a transplanted penis.
